What is sex trafficking?
Sex trafficking is the exploitation of individuals through force, fraud, or coercion for commercial sex. When a minor is involved, no coercion is necessary—it is automatically trafficking under U.S. law.
How widespread is the problem?
Trafficking happens in all 50 states, in rural and urban areas alike. It is a hidden crime, making it difficult to track, but thousands of victims are being exploited at any given time.
Who is at risk?
Traffickers prey on vulnerability. At-risk youth include those in unstable home situations, foster care, runaway or homeless teens, and those with a history of abuse or neglect. However, any child can be targeted, regardless of background.
What signs should I look for in my child or others?
Changes in behavior, secrecy around online activity, new older friends, sudden access to expensive items, unexplained absences, or drastic shifts in personality may indicate exploitation.
How do traffickers find their victims?
Most trafficking begins online, through social media, gaming platforms, and messaging apps. Traffickers groom victims by building trust before exploiting them.
